Resources to gain the knowledge necessary to design your own site.
Titles below have a pop-up if there is more information available.
- HTML for the World Wide Web by Elizabeth Castro.
- Very well written and organized.
You can literally use this as a cookbook to build a page.
Look up what you want to do, copy it into your page.
Starts with a nice progression from total ignorance to very solid design.
Do not give your hosting company administrative rights to your domain name. You may have real problems if you decide to switch hosts.
- HTML-Kit
- Free download html editor - color codes your write-up for easy editing. It has a spell checker, code checker, and previews in all browsers that you have installed. Has several levels of assistance - you can use as much or as little as you want. Commands you are very comfortable with - you just type in. Others you type the first few characters, Chami pops up the valid choices to pick from.
- Color Picker
- I use Microsearch Color Picker. There may be better ones but this one does everything I want/need. Has an eye dropper to pick a color off the screen that you like or need to match.
- Steal
- If you see a page you like, copy it, changing the code as needed. As your site gets bigger you will/should build "swipe" files. You take a feature you like from another page and do not have to type all that stuff again. Please do not steal images - make your own. No one who builds good code cares if you "steal" that.
- Learning
- Join a newsgroup such as alt.html or alt.html.critique and read anything that interests you.
Also look at the code on pages that you like.
View source will open up the page's code for your review.

- Scanner
- You may also need a digital scanner. I do not use this one for pictures!
- Web hosting available
- $60/year for full web hosting. This includes php, MySQL, perl, and cPanel which allows for easy management of your site. Over 99% uptime for the last 3 years.
